Overbanding Joint Sealing Tape – Skid-Resistant and BBA / HAPAS Approved

This preformed bitumen overbanding tape is used to seal joints in asphalt/tarmacadam and concrete surfaces. It’s commonly applied after pothole repairs, road reinstatement jobs, or utility trenching, and helps stop water getting in and damaging the edges of your repair. By sealing over the joint, you reduce the risk of fretting, cracking and early failure.

The tape is BBA / HAPAS approved for use on the UK road network, and includes high PSV aggregate throughout the material to maintain a consistent skid resistance rating of over 60 SRV. That means it stays grippy, even in wet weather or on corners, unlike some alternatives which only meet the anti-skid requirement straight after installation.

It’s often referred to as overbanding tape, bitumen roll, joint sealing tape, tar banding, or reinstatement strip – whatever the term, this is the tape used by professionals to finish road and pothole repairs to spec.

Application Instructions

Installation is simple and requires no specialist equipment beyond a standard gas torch.

  1. Make sure the surface is clean, dry and above 0°C. Remove all loose material.

  2. If installing onto concrete or block paving, apply bitumen primer and allow it to dry.

  3. Cut the tape to the length you need and position it directly over the joint. Slightly overlap if you're joining sections.

  4. Warm the surface gently using a propane torch, then apply heat directly to the tape in a sweeping motion, about 200mm above.

  5. The tape will soften, become molten, and bond to the surface. Take care not to overheat or burn the tape.

  6. Once the tape has fully melted and settled into the surface, let it cool for 5–10 minutes.

  7. Use a flat blade to test adhesion at the edges. Reheat if needed. Once cooled, the area can be reopened to traffic.

Cold Weather Advice

If applying in colder weather, bring the rolls up to room temperature before use. Cold material may become brittle and can snap when unrolled. Pre-warming the tape will help it lay flat and melt evenly.
