Work out roughly how much kiln-dried firewood you'll get through this season, based on how often you light the stove or fire. Enter your usual burning pattern below.

How this calculator works
We multiply your burning hours per day, days per week, and number of weeks in the season to get your total burning hours, then multiply that by an hourly consumption rate to estimate total kilograms of wood needed:
Total kg = hours/day × days/week × weeks × kg/hour
The default consumption rate of 1.5kg per hour is a reasonable average for a well-run, efficient wood-burning stove using kiln-dried hardwood. Open fires, older stoves, or running the stove hotter for a larger room will get through wood faster — increase the rate in advanced options if that sounds like you.
Getting the most from your firewood
Why kiln-dried matters
Kiln drying reduces moisture content to below 20%, the threshold for "Ready to Burn" certified wood. Drier wood ignites more easily, burns hotter and cleaner, and produces far less smoke, tar and chimney residue than wet or seasoned-only logs.
Wood species and burn time
Denser hardwoods like oak burn slower and longer, making them well suited to overnight burns, while lighter woods like birch or ash catch more quickly and are useful for getting a fire started or shorter burns.
Storage
Keep firewood in a dry, well-ventilated spot, off the ground, and protected from rain to maintain its low moisture content until you're ready to burn it.
Frequently asked questions
Will I use more wood in a particularly cold winter?
Yes — this calculator assumes a consistent burning pattern. In a colder spell you may burn for longer each day or run the stove hotter, so treat the result as a helpful baseline and buy a little extra as a buffer.
Do bags or crates work out better value?
20kg bags are convenient for smaller or occasional use and easy to store indoors, while a standard crate suits regular users who go through more wood over a season. Compare the total cost for the quantity you need on our firewood collection.
Does wood type change how much I need?
Yes — denser hardwoods like oak generally burn for longer per kilogram than lighter woods. If you're using a lighter wood species, consider increasing the consumption rate slightly in advanced options.
