Lumpwood BBQ Charcoal for Grills and Smokers

The right charcoal depends on how you cook. Lumpwood lights quickly and burns hot which suits grilling, searing and pizza ovens. It also works in kettle barbecues, ceramic grills and smokers, though it burns through faster than briquettes.

Because lumpwood is hardwood carbonised in natural pieces, it leaves less ash and gives a cleaner flavour than charcoal pressed with additives.

Each 5kg bag is easy to carry and store, so a pallet can be split between sites, kept as stock through the season or sold on as individual bags.

Choosing Between Lumpwood and Briquettes

The choice comes down to how long you're cooking for. Lumpwood reaches cooking temperature sooner and runs hotter, so it's the better fit for direct grilling and quick, high-heat cooking.

Briquettes are pressed from charcoal dust and take longer to light but they hold a steadier temperature over several hours. Lumpwood still handles slow cooking on a smoker, as long as it's topped up during the cook.

FAQs

How long does lumpwood charcoal take to light?

Lumpwood is usually ready to cook on in around 15 to 20 minutes once the pieces are coated in grey ash.

How should BBQ charcoal be stored?

Keep it under cover, off the ground and away from damp. Charcoal absorbs moisture, and damp charcoal is harder to light and burns less evenly.

How do I know when charcoal is ready to cook on?

Charcoal is ready once the flames have died down and the pieces are coated in a light grey ash.

How much charcoal do I need for a barbecue?

It depends on the size of the barbecue and how long you're cooking for. For direct grilling, a single even layer across the charcoal grate is usually enough.
