Lumpwood Charcoal That Lights Quickly and Burns Hot

Lumpwood is made by carbonising pieces of hardwood rather than compressing fuel into uniform blocks. The natural pieces catch fire quickly and bring the barbecue up to temperature without a long wait. They also respond quickly to changes in airflow which makes it easier to raise the heat for searing or reduce it for indirect cooking.

Charcoal for Grilling, Smoking and Indirect Cooking

The high heat works well for burgers, sausages and steaks cooked directly over the coals. For slower or indirect cooking, the charcoal can be arranged to one side of the barbecue and controlled through the vents. It is suitable for charcoal barbecues, kettle grills, ceramic grills and smokers.

Lumpwood provides the heat rather than a specific smoke flavour. Add a suitable smoking wood when you want to introduce a particular flavour during a longer cook.

FAQ

What Is Lumpwood Charcoal?

Lumpwood charcoal is hardwood heated with very little oxygen until it becomes lightweight pieces of carbon-rich fuel. Unlike briquettes, the pieces are not compressed into a uniform shape.

Can Lumpwood Charcoal Be Used in a Smoker?

Yes. It can provide the main heat source in suitable smokers, kettle barbecues and ceramic grills. Follow the appliance instructions and use the vents to manage the temperature.

How Long Does Lumpwood Charcoal Burn?

Burn time depends on the amount used, the size of the pieces, the airflow and the cooking temperature. Closing the vents slightly slows the fire, while increased airflow makes it burn hotter and faster.

How Should Lumpwood Charcoal Be Stored?

Keep the bags in a dry place away from rain and ground moisture. Store them away from open flames and other ignition sources until the charcoal is needed.
